Small-scale fonio processing enterprises can be found in towns, e. Fonio seems not threatened by genetic erosion.
RAPD-analysis has shown a relatively high level of genetic diversity in fonio compared to other millets, possibly due to its outbreeding nature. In Nigeria, Benin and Togo germplasm characterization work for a better understanding and utilization of the fonio gene pool has started.

So far fonio has been largely neglected in breeding programmes. Breeding efforts are being undertaken in Guinea, but no results are available so far. Improvement of fonio through traditional hybridization does not seem attractive because of insufficient knowledge on its floral biology and the extraordinarily miniature nature of its floral organs. It is a crop with a short cycle, able to produce on very poor soils.
It is appreciated as a food in West Africa, and its nutritional quality is excellent. Study of the genetic diversity of fonio and multilocational screening of germplasm are also highly recommended. The useful plants of West Tropical Africa. Volume 2, Families E—I.
